The National Weather Service has issued a COASTAL FLOOD WARNING, which is in effect from 4a.m. to 11a.m. Wednesday. A High Surf Advisory has also been issued. This High Surf Advisory is in effect from 5a.m. Wednesday to 5a.m. Thursday.
A strong low pressure system developing over the Gulf of Mexico tonight will track west of the region Wednesday and Wednesday night. This storm system will produce periods of heavy rainfall and strong onshore winds. At the same time that these heavy rains and strong winds will be impacting the region, high astronomical tides will also be occurring. Tidal departures will be significantly higher than predicted, reaching 9.8 and 10.0 feet mean lower low water at Fort Pulaski with the Wednesday morning high tide, which is at 7:30a.m.
Many locations along the South Carolina coast and Georgia coast will experience flooding due to the elevated tides.
Salt water could rise into yards, streets and driveways. Highway 80 leading to Tybee Island will also be impacted with high water possibly making the roadway impassable.
The strong onshore winds will also result in dangerous breaking waves reaching between 5 and 7 feet in the surf zone along the South Carolina and Georgia coast from late tonight through Wednesday night.
