Emergency responders are learning from one of the most serious accidents in Chatham County history - the sugar refinery explosion.
Dozens came together for a burn and blast conference in Savannah this morning to talk about what worked, and what didn't, responding to the incident.
One of the lessons learned, organizers say, is making sure an emergency pre-plan for every facility is in place.
“Some of the other things they wanted to know other than the pre-planning is how do they find out about their water accessibility and in the future, sharing information from one industry to another, and one fire department to another,” says Chief Greg Long of the Port Wentworth Fire Dept.
Proceeds raised from the conference are going toward a fund assisting victims and families affected by the explosion.
