A small group of supporters for Troy Anthony Davis gathered at the Chatham County Courthouse Tuesday morning. They want to support family members and other supporters who have traveled to Atlanta today as the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals takes up the Davis case.
Attorneys for Georgia death row inmate Troy Davis are asking the federal panel to let them file another appeal of his death sentence. Davis was convicted of the 1989 murder of Savannah Police Officer Mark MacPhail, but the hearing could turn on whether federal law allows the attorneys to call for a new trial.
Davis supporters and family members say Davis should receive a new trial based on new evidence that's been uncovered, i.e. the recanting of seven of nine eye witnesses.
The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals takes up the Davis case at 1 p.m. Tuesday. A decision from the court may not be known immediately.
