More than two weeks after the Imperial Sugar Refinery explosion, thousands are expected to turn out for a "Community That Remembers" memorial service Saturday.
Workers spent today setting up for the event, putting down carpet and setting up chairs. The memorial service starts at 1 pm at the Savannah Civic Center. Organizers urge you to get there early because anywhere from 2,500 to 6,500 are expected to attend. Doors open at 11:30.
Port Wentworth's mayor tells NEWS 3 the service is the next step toward closure. "Now we need to move forward. We need to stay together as a community and back imperial sugar to hope and pray they will be able to find a way to rebuild the plant because so many people depend on the refinery for their livelihood," says Mayor Glenn Jones.
If you can't make it out, NEWS 3 will air the memorial service live. It starts at one pm on WSAV. You can also watch our coverage streaming live on our website.
We've also arranged for the families at the Augusta Burn Center to watch the service by working with our sister station in Augusta.
