AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - The death toll from the Feb. 7 sugar refinery explosion and fire near Savannah rose to 12 on Tuesday when another patient died at a hospital burn center, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Eleven patients from the Imperial Sugar Co. in Port Wentworth remained in critical condition at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital, and another was in serious condition, spokeswoman Beth Frits said.
The explosion was fueled by airborne sugar dust at the refinery, near Savannah, investigators have said. They have not yet determined what ignited it.
