Georgia 12th District Congressman John Barrow (D) released the following statement today in regards to the OSHA findings on the Imperial Sugar Refineries in Port Wentworth and Gramercy, LA:
“Fines and penalties are an important part of the process, but they’re no substitute for clear regulations that prevent this sort of thing from happening in the first place. We shouldn’t let OSHA’s coming down hard on Imperial to deflect attention from OSHA’s responsibility here, which is to adopt clear rules that will prevent this sort of thing from happening again. By passing my bill, the House has taken the lead, and now it's the Senate's turn. We owe it to the victims of the Port Wentworth tragedy – and to all the other victims before that – to do what we can to prevent this sort of thing from ever happening again.”
Editor's note: This year Cong. Barrow co-introduced legislation in Congress that would force OSHA to issue rules regulating combustible dusts...like sugar. The current OSHA dust regulation is 20 years old and is only mandatory for grain plants and silos.
