Annual W. W. Law Lecture by Dr. Dorothy Cotton, former education director for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) under the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and retired Cornell University administrator. Presented in part by the Telfair Museums and Georgia Humanities Council.  Jepson Center for the Arts, Neises Auditorium, 207 W. York St.

Feb 17th, 10 a.m.: Dr. Dorothy Cotton will conduct a student forum at Savannah State University. Presented in part by the SSU Center for Leadership Lecture Series and Georgia Humanities Council. King-Frazier, Savannah Ballroom. 

Feb 17th, Time TBA: A Colloquy with Students led by stage/screen actorAvery Brooks and actress/ playwright Jewell Robinson for students majoring in, or interested in, theatre. Brooks and Robinson will be featured in the production, “Ira Aldridge: the African Roscius,” on Feb 18 at 7 p.m., AASU Fine Arts Center.   Presented in part by the SSU Department of Fine Arts and Armstrong Atlantic State University. SSU Kennedy Fine Arts Theatre.

"Dem Fish, Dey's Biting" - The Fourth Annual Festival "Gathering, " featuring storytelling, demonstrations and recipe tastings focusing on families and descendants of African Americans in the fisheries along the Georgia coast. Presented by the SSU-NOAA (National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration) African American Oral History Project. Call 912-358-4289 for information.

Feb 18th, 4-6 p.m.: "GA 2 DC," produced and directed by Tony Byrd, documents the experiences of a group of students from Savannah and Atlanta who took a bus ride to Washington, D.C., to witness the dedication of the MLK Jr. monument.  A discussion of the state of young Black men in America will follow. Presented by Tybee Pictures Documentary Films. First African Baptist Church, 23 Montgomery St.

Feb 18th, 7 p.m.: “Ira Aldridge – The African Roscius,” a tribute to the life of the celebrated 19th century Shakespearean actor who was forced to emigrate to Europe in the early 1800s to practice his craft.  Twenty-first century Shakespearean actor Avery Brooks will portray Aldridge while producer/actor Jewell Robinson will portray Aldridge’s daughter Amanda. Presented in part by Armstrong Atlantic State University and the Savannah State University Department of Fine Arts . AASU Fine Arts Center, 11935 Abercorn St.

How I Got Over: Remembering Our Stories of Faith, Resistance and Freedom by master Storyteller Lillian Grant-Baptiste and the historical Second African Baptist “Inspirational Voices” Choir. Presented in part by Second African Baptist Church. Second African Baptist Church, 123 Houston St.

Feb 21st, 6:30 p.m.: The Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum Welcomes Open Mic with Sistah “V” -- presented in part by the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum at the William Scarbrough  House,  41 MLK Jr. Blvd.

Feb 23rd: Come and join the Savannah Technical College of Liberty Campus 2012 Black History Month program. The community information fair and living wax display is from 10a-12noon and the program featuring Hinesville Mayor James Thomas, Jr. is from 6-7p.  Both events take place at the campus on Technology Drive off Airport Rd. in Hinesville. “Uneven Fairways,” a film documentary chronicling the stories of African-American golfers who faced discrimination; includes an appearance by Jim Thorpe. Location TBA

Feb 24th and 25th at 7pm and February 26th at 3pm: Abeni Cultural Arts Performing Dance Studio will be presenting encore performances of the production at the Black Box at S.P.A.C.E. (9 W.
