Just off of 278 in Ridgeland there is September Oaks Vineyard, a place that can almost transport you back in time. It's owned by the woods family and while there may be other wineries around, September Oaks is one of the only vineyards in our area. and Aliceanne Toole says the southern charm makes her job so much sweeter.
"It seems off the path when you drive down here, that's what most people remark about, when they come down here, just how amazing the canopy of oak trees is and just how "Tara" like it is," said Toole.
From vine to vino they make and bottle their own local wine as much as possible.
"We do have a small Muscadine vinyard, its not enough to serve all of our needs, so we buy from other growers in the state, and some of our blending wines we buy from out of state."
But Toole tells folks how they are trying to add to their supply and restore a piece of South Carolina history.
"We have planted a new vineyard with a grape called Lenoir, which is a grape that originated right here in the lowcountry, back when it was first settled, and then it kind of just disappeared, so we've made the first Lenoir wine here we believe in over 200 years."
And she says whetHer you're a local or a visitor--you can come in and shop, taste a variety of the wines they make and hear a tale about what makes September Oaks a lowcountry treasure.
"We're very easy to get to if your visiting Hilton Head or Bluffton or Beaufort, or Savannah, Charleston, we have a lot of folks that come in and now consider us their local winery."
