The Sun City Cloggers show off their toe tapping, high-energy routines that they've performed over the past eight years. This group started nearly a decade ago when leader Norma Lavell moved down here from Ohio.
"A friend of ours started going to Savannah theres a group there called the 'Home-Cooking Cloggers,' and we started going there and then we had the teacher, Claudia Couler, she came over here and she taught for about 24 weeks, and then she decided she didnt want to come all the way over here to Sun City every week," said Lavell.
So Lavell kicked up her heels and began teaching the cloggers. She says its grown over the years and they have about 40 folks in their group now, and its not just for ladies, they have five men on their team as well. And with South Carolina having the 8th highest rate of diabetes in the nation, Lavell says this is a great way for them to stay active.
"I think the benefits are great exercise plus were using our brains, we're not just sitting around, and it's companionship too of being around these people all the time so you make a lot of friends this way."
Organizers tell me that this is about friendship and fun and not about competition.
"I mean it's just great, we moved here not knowing what we were going to come into here in Sun City, cause we had so many friends in Ohio, and now we have so many friends down here and it's just great, it's fun, we have a good time doing it, and we dance to all kinds of music so we do something that everybody likes."
And Lavell says she enjoys performing with the cloggers at various community events but it's really about seeing her students grow.
"The benefits for me, you know I teach them, and it's fun to see how they progress and how much better they get every week."
