Savannah College of Art and Design baseball player Richard Sullivan has been drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 11th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft.
Sullivan, who was the 340th overall selection in the 2008 draft, becomes the college's second-ever pick in the MLB draft in the program's 18-year history. Ryan Pope was drafted in the third round by the New York Yankees in 2007.
Sullivan, a 6-foot-3, 235-pound left-handed pitcher from Louisville, Ky., was named to the NAIA All-America second team in 2008. The 2008 Florida Sun Conference and NAIA Region XIV Player of the Year led the Bees to a college-record 33 wins in 2008 as SCAD advanced to the NAIA Region XIV Tournament. He helped the pitching corps for the Bees to a 3.47 ERA, which was ranked seventh in the NAIA. Sullivan, who holds five individual college records, led SCAD with a 7-4 won-loss record this season with a 2.36 earned run average in 16 appearances (14 starts).
Sullivan collected six complete games as he tossed 107 innings in 2008 as he tied a college record with 122 strikeouts while walking just 19.
Sullivan, who registered a college-record tying 14 strikeouts twice (Tennessee Temple University and Webber International University) this season, limited the opposition to a paltry .210 batting average.
Sullivan is currently ranked in the top 25 in four statistical categories in the NAIA. He is ranked eighth in innings pitched per game (6.688), 19th in opponents' batting average (.210), 21st in strikeouts per nine innings (10.26), 24th in earned run average (2.36).
