Dunn homers, White Sox pound Indians 9-3

CHICAGO (AP) Adam Dunn hit his 15th homer, A.J. Pierzynski and Dayan Viciedo each went deep for the second time in as many nights, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 9-3 on Friday for their seventh win in eight games.

Pierzynski also tripled and scored three runs while driving in two. Viciedo knocked in two runs and scored twice, and the White Sox gave Jose Quintana (1-0) all the support he needed in his first major league start.

They used the long ball again to take out the AL Central leaders after hitting five homers Thursday against Minnesota. Dunn drove a two-run shot in the first after Cleveland scored a run in the top half. Pierzynski connected leading off the second, and Chicago broke open a one-run game in the sixth, scoring three times with two outs while chasing Jeanmar Gomez (3-3).

Helton HRs, Rockies end Reds' streak with 6-3 win

CINCINNATI (AP) Todd Helton homered and drove in three runs Friday night, leading the Colorado Rockies to a 6-3 victory that ended the Cincinnati Reds' longest winning streak of the season at six games.

Helton had a two-run homer his first since April 29 and a run-scoring single off Johnny Cueto (5-2), who gave up a career-high 11 hits in only 4 2-3 innings.

Rookie left-hander Christian Friedrich (2-1) went five innings against an offense that had been on a home run tear 10 in the last four games. Joey Votto had four hits for the Reds, including a pair of doubles.

Rafael Betancourt pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save in nine chances.

The struggling Rockies won for only the fifth time in their last 20 games.

BENGALS-ZEITLER

Bengals sign 1st-round pick Zeitler

CINCINNATI (AP) The Bengals signed Wisconsin guard Kevin Zeitler to a four-year deal on Friday, leaving both of their first-round picks under contact.

The Bengals had already signed Alabama cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick, the 17th overall pick. They got that selection by trading quarterback Carson Palmer to the Raiders last season.

Their own pick was the 21st overall. They traded it to New England and moved down to 27th, where they took Zeitler. He's expected to compete for a starting job.

Cincinnati has signed eight of its 10 draft picks.

MLS fines and suspends Sounders' Alonso

NEW YORK (AP) Seattle Sounders midfielder Osvaldo Alonso has suspended two games and fined an undisclosed amount for a reckless challenge during a match against Columbus earlier in the week.

Osvaldo was penalized Friday for sliding with feet raised and his studs showing and using excessive force against the Crew's Cole Grossman in the 82nd minute of Columbus' 2-0 victory Wednesday night.

The disciplinary committee also added a game to the suspension of Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Hector Jimenez and fined him an undisclosed amount for a similar play against San Jose's Steven Beitashour in the 59th minute of a 3-2 loss to the Earthquakes on Wednesday. Jiminez received a red card on the play, carrying an automatic one-game suspension.

DEE'S FINISH LINE

So many angels have guided this runner's journey

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Makorobondo "Dee" Salukombo has benefited from having quite a few angels on his shoulder.

There is the mother and father who raised 10 kids. There is the dad escaping jail to join the family in the flight from Congo to Uganda and to, of all places, suburban Cleveland.

There is the high school guidance counselor who treated Dee as more than just another needy kid, helping him to fill out the paperwork to get into and pay for college.

And there is the cross country and track coach at Denison University, who along with his wife filled a hole in their lives by virtually adopting the smiling kid.

With degree in hand, Dee will now try to repay so many kindnesses with a learning center full of books and computers in Congo.
