PHILLIES-CARDINALS

Phillies beat Cardinals 5-3 in 10 innings

ST. LOUIS (AP) Hunter Pence hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning off Jason Motte and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 on Friday night.

The Phillies won their third in a row after surviving a fourth inning in which Pence, the right fielder, and Shane Victorino, the center fielder, lost balls in the lights. The winning runs came too late for Cliff Lee, a 17-game winner last season still seeking his first win of 2012.

Juan Pierre singled to start the 10th against Motte, working his second inning. Pence had been hitless in nine at-bats before lining the St. Louis closer's first pitch over the right field wall for his team-leading 11th homer. He's 3 for 10 against Motte (3-2) with two homers and three RBIs.

CUBS-PIRATES

Cubs' losing streak hits 10 in 1-0 loss to Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) A.J. Burnett and four relievers worked out of trouble all game and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 10th straight loss with a 1-0 victory on Friday night.

Burnett (3-2) gave up six hits, struck out six and walked two over 5 1-3 innings and the National League's best bullpen made it stand up as the Pirates extended Chicago starter Ryan Dempster's misery. Joel Hanrahan worked out of a two-on, one out jam in the ninth for his 11th save.

Dempster (0-3) remains winless since last August, surrendering one run and seven hits in 7 1-3 innings, striking out six and walking one while dropping his ERA to 2.14.

The Cubs left 11 runners on base and went 0 for 12 with runners in scoring position.

76ERS-CELTICS

Celtics, Sixers prepare for another seventh game

BOSTON (AP) The Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers are preparing for a seventh game in their Eastern Conference semifinal series.

The teams will meet in Boston on Saturday for the chance to play in the conference finals. Philadelphia forced a seventh game by beating the Celtics 82-75 on Wednesday night. Both teams took Thursday off.

It's the first time the two rivals have met in a Game 7 since Dr. J and Andrew Toney beat the original Big Three in Boston to put the Sixers in the 1982 NBA finals.

The Celtics are 20-7 in seventh games. Philadelphia is 6-8.

76ERS-CELTICS

Celtics G Avery Bradley (shoulder) out for season

WALTHAM, Mass. (AP) Boston Celtics guard Avery Bradley is done for the season.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers says Bradley was scheduled for surgery on his left shoulder Friday and won't return for the rest of the playoffs. That moves Ray Allen back into the starting lineup.

Bradley's shoulder has been popping in and out all season. He has missed the last two games of Boston's Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Philadelphia 76ers.

The 21-year-old Bradley moved into the starting lineup when Allen was injured and stayed there after the future Hall of Famer returned. Rivers said Bradley is one of the keys to Boston's defense.

PIRATES-MOVES

Pirates designate OF McLouth for assignment

PITTSBURGH (AP) The Pirates on Friday designated outfielder Nate McLouth for assignment, and recalled outfielder Matt Hague from Triple-A Indianapolis.

McLouth, signed as a free agent on Dec. 7, hit just .140 with Pittsburgh, scoring four runs while driving in two more in 57 at-bats.

Hague began the season with the Pirates, going 1-for-9 with two RBIs in five games before being optioned April 14.

Hague hit .278 with five doubles, one home run and 15 RBIs in 36 Triple-A games. He went 8-for-26 (.308) with a home run in his last six games.

PENN STATE-SPANIER LAWSUIT

Ex-Penn State president sues, eyes Sandusky emails

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) Former Penn State University president Graham Spanier (SPAN'-yer) has filed a civil lawsuit to force the school to release emails related to its investigation of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

The lawsuit was filed late Friday in Centre County court. The Centre Daily Times newspaper first reported it on its website.

The lawsuit says Spanier wants the emails so he can better recall events, citing emails sent between 1998 and 2004.

Penn State hasn't commented. It's conducting its own investigation into the abuse scandal. The effort is led by ex-FBI chief Louis Freeh (LOO'-ee free).

Spanier was ousted Nov. 9, four days after Sandusky was charged with dozens of sexual-assault counts.

Prosecutors say eight of 10 boys Sandusky is accused of abusing were attacked on campus.

Sandusky denies the allegations.

SECOND MILE-SANDUSKY

Sandusky charity to shut down, transfer programs

PHILADELPHIA (AP) The charity for troubled youths started by former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky more than three decades ago is seeking court approval to shut down.

The Second Mile says it has been financially crippled by the child-sex abuse scandal involving its founder and onetime public face and has no other option but to close.

The charity is asking a judge to allow it to transfer programs and millions of dollars in assets to a Texas-based youth ministry that serves abused and neglected children.

Prosecutors say Sandusky found his victims through The Second Mile. He has pleaded innocent to more than 50 counts of sexual abuse involving 10 alleged victims. He awaits a June trial.

PENN STATE-ABUSE

AG: Sandusky dismissal premature without 'facts'

PITTSBURGH (AP) State prosecutors say a defense motion asking a judge to dismiss child sexual-abuse charges against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky is premature because there are no "facts" in the form of sworn testimony on which to base the request.

Sandusky's attorney asked a Centre County judge last week to dismiss the charges, arguing some counts are too vague to defend and others involve victims whose identities haven't been determined.

But prosecutors said Friday such an argument can only be made based on sworn testimony already offered in the case. So far, there hasn't been any because Sandusky waived his right to a preliminary hearing and no testimony has been taken at pretrial hearings.

School officials' response to the charges last year led to the firing of head coach Joe Paterno.

PITT-ZEIGLER

Transfer Trey Zeigler cleared to play at Pitt

PITTSBURGH (AP) Former Central Michigan guard Trey Zeigler has been cleared by the NCAA to play at Pitt next season.

The NCAA told the school on Friday it will waive the mandatory one-year sit-out rule for Zeigler, who left Central Michigan last month after his father, Ernie Zeigler, was not retained as coach.

Zeigler will have two years of eligibility remaining. He averaged 16.0 points in 63 games over two seasons at Central Michigan and was named to the All-Mid American Conference third team this spring after averaging 15.6 points and 6.7 rebounds for the Chippewas.

The 6-foot-5 Zeigler gives the Panthers immediate help at shooting guard following the graduation of star Ashton Gibbs.

Coach Jamie Dixon said he was "grateful" for the NCAA's decision.
