Fort Worth-based American Airlines took the wraps off its newest aircraft Monday at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
American Airlines has 29 Boeing 737-800s joining its fleet this year.
The 737s will replace older MD-80 aircraft, many of which have been flying for decades.
The 737s offer 35 percent greater fuel efficiency than the MD-80, larger overhead bins, drop-down video monitors, more comfortable seats and laptop power ports.
At a time when the airline industry faces enormous challenges, American said the planes are part of its long-term strategic plan.
"Our new 737s are a vital investment that will benefit our customers, employees, shareholders and the communities we serve," said Gerard Arpey, American's CEO. "They will help keep our product competitive while offering cost, environmental and operational benefits."
American will phase in a total of 76 new 737-800s through the first quarter of 2011.
The first 50 aircraft will be based at American's hub in Chicago.
