A flood warning is in effect for Appling, Atkinson, Bacon, Clinch, Coffee, Echols, Jeff Davis, western Pierce, and western Ware Counties until 3:15 am Friday.

At 7:12 pm weather service doppler radar indicated an area of strong to severe thunderstorms producing very heavy rainfall over portions of southeast Georgia and the eastern Florida panhandle. Rainfall amounts since Wednesday have neared 3 to 6 inches. Another 2 to 4 inches of rain are likely through 3:15 am Friday morning as a squall line of showers and storms moves through tonight.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, highways, streets, and underpasses. Additionally, country roads and farmlands along the banks of creeks, streams and other low lying areas are subject to flooding. Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. To escape rising water move up to higher ground. Make the smart choice, turn around...don’t drown.

A flood warning remains in effect until 2:00 pm Friday for Montgomery, Toombs, Wheeler, and Telfair Counties.

At 5:27 pm weather radar estimates indicate 3 to 5 inches of rain has fallen over these counties during the past 24 hours ending at 5:00 pm Thursday. Additional rainfall amounts up to 2 inches is possible through Friday morning.

Numerous creeks in this area have reached bankfull and are beginning to spread into their natural flood plains. Across the counties, some roads in low lying areas have standing water due to poor drainage. Turnpike creek around 5 miles south of McRae in Telfair County was near 9.8 feet at 5:00 pm. The creek is rising slowly and flood stage is 10 feet. Minor flooding of woodlands and fields near the creek is expected through Friday morning.
