Volunteers play an imortant role when severe weather happens. The National Weather Service (NWS) uses volunteers as storm spotters. It is their job to go out into the surrounding communities and report what kind of weather they're experiencing. These spotters provide a vital service by relaying back storm reports to help weather service meteorologists issue warnings on storm's that pose a danger to life or property. Most of the time the training necessary to become a storm spotter is free and provided by the National Weather Service.
The two main NWS forecast offices that serve the WSAV veiwing area are Jacksonville and Charleston. The Jacksonville office is responsible for our counties south of the Altamaha River.
