A tropical Depression has formed off the Mid Atlantic coast this morning.
Satellite imagery indicates that low pressure that passed east of the Outer Banks of North Carolina yesterday has become a tropical depression this morning... the first of the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season.
At 11am... the center of tropical depression one was located near latitude 37.3 north... longitude 71.0 west or about 310 miles south of Providence, Rhode Island.
The depression is moving toward the NE around 17 mph... and this general motion is expected to continue over the next 24 to 48 hours.
Maxiumum sustained winds are around 35 mph with higher gusts.
Estimated central pressure is down to 1007 mb or 29.74 inches of mercury.
The depression is not expected to threaten any land areas. Also... the depression is expected to become a tropical storm over the next day or so... but then is forecast to weaken or dissipate over colder waters by Saturday.
