Tornadoes...they are considered to be the most violent storms that nature has to offer
Tornadoes are one of the most devastating hazards from a severe thunderstorm. A tornado is a violently rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. If the column does NOT reach the ground, it is called a funnel cloud.
Tornado Facts
1. Tornadoes usually move from the southwest to the northeast at an average forward speed of 30mph. But tornadoes have been clocked as fast as 70mph.
2. Do NOT open windows. This only allows damaging winds to enter the home or building, which can cause serious injury. Instead, leave windows alone and go to a safe place immediately.
3. Tornadoes in our area are usually embedded in heavy rain, which makes spotting them difficult.
4. Tornadoes can happen any time of year, but spring is the most active season in our area.
Tornadoes & Safety
1. Before the Storm: Develop a plan for you and your family for home, work, school AND outdoors. Have frequent drills. And make sure you know your county.
2. During a Tornado: Move to a pre-designated shelter area, such as a basement or a small interior room on the lowest floor. Stay away from windows.
3. If Caught Outside: Get out of your automobile and go to a low-lying area
4. If You're in a Mobile Home...even if it's tied down...get out! They offer little protection from tornadoes.
