A flash flood watch is in effect for the entire Coastal Empire and Low Country today through this evening.
A Gulf low pressure will move across southeast South Carolina and southeast Georgia today bringing widespread heavy rains. Rainfall amounts of 1.5 to 3.5 inches can be expected with isolated amounts in excess of 4 inches possible. The ground remains extremely saturated from significant rainfalls this winter and any additional heavy rain will likely produce excessive run off and flash flooding.
The risk for flash flooding will be greatest in low lying and poor drainage areas. In addition... many rivers remain above flood stage including the Ogeechee... Ohoopee... Savannah and Canoochee rivers. Additional rises... some potentially significant... could occur this weekend into early next week.
A flash flood watch means there is a potential for flash flooding based on current forecasts. Monitor the latest forecasts and be alert for possible flash flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action if flooding develops.
