Flood Warnings Update

Many area rivers remain above flood stage due to heavy rain over the months of December and January. Most of them are falling, but they will be slow to do so...

A flood warning continues for the Savannah River at Burtons Ferry affecting Screven County in southeastern Georgia and Allendale County in South Carolina as well as for the river near Clyo affecting Effingham and Screven Counties in southeastern Georgia as well as Hampton and Jasper Counties in South Carolina.

At 11 am Wednesday the Savannah River at Burtons Ferry had a stage of 16.6 feet. Flood stage is 15.0 feet. Minor flooding is occurring. The river is forecast to continue rising to 17.3 feet by Thursday morning. At 18.2 feet, the picnic area at Stoney Bluff Landing becomes flooded. Access to the house at the end of Stoney Bluff Landing Road is limited.

At 10 am Wednesday the Savannah River near Clyo had a stage of 16.1 feet. Flood stage is 11 feet. Moderate flooding is occurring. The river is forecast to begin a slow fall on Thursday. At 14.5 feet, the bottom floor of several riverfront homes along Tom Goethe Road begins to flood.



A flood warning remains in effect for the Ogeechee River near Midville affecting Burke, Emanuel, and Jenkins Counties as well as for the river near Eden affecting Bryan, Effingham, and Chatham Counties.

At 10 am Wednesday the Ogeechee River near Midville had a stage of 6.4 feet. Flood stage is 6.0 feet. Minor flooding is occurring. The river is forecast to rise to 6.7 feet after midnight, then begin a slow fall. At 6.0 feet, the access road into the river bluff in Midville begins to flood. The lower portion of Johnson Road near Herndon also becomes covered.

At 10 am Wednesday the Ogeechee River near Eden had a stage of 12.9 feet. Flood stage is 9 feet. Moderate flooding is occurring. The river is forecast to continue falling. At 13.5 feet, several homes and a picnic area along Yarbrough Landing Road begin to flood.



A flood warning continues for the Ohoopee River near Reidsville affecting Tattnall County.

At 10 am Wednesday the Ohoopee River near Reidsville had a stage of 14.2 feet. Flood stage is 11.0 feet. Minor flooding is occurring. The river is forecast to rise to continue falling. At 14.0 feet, flooding of several riverside unimproved roads and some agricultural land occurs.



A flood warning continues for the Altamaha River at Charlotte affecting Jeff Davis, Montgomery, and Toombs Counties as well as for the river at Baxley affecting Appling and Toombs Counties.

At 7:00 am Wednesday the Altamaha River at Charlotte had a stage of 16.9 feet. Flood stage is 15.0 feet. Minor flooding is occurring. The river is forecast to continue falling to near 16.2 feet by Friday morning. At 15.0 feet, flooding of mainly low lying areas occurs.

At 8:45 am Wednesday the Altamaha River at Baxley had a stage of 78.9 feet. Flood stage is 74.5 feet. Minor flooding is occurring. The river is forecast to fall to a stage of 78.0 feet by Saturday morning. At 78.0 feet, water begins to affect homes in the Carter Bight and Davis Landing areas.



A flood warning continues for the Oconee River near Mount Vernon affecting Montgomery, Treutlen, and Wheeler Counties.

At 4 pm Wednesday the Oconee River near Mount Vernon had a stage of 14.9 feet. Flood stage is 16.0 feet. Minor flooding is forecast. The river is forecast to rise above flood stage by Friday morning and continue rising to 16.7 feet by Saturday evening. At 17.0 feet, minor flooding continues and expands into the pastures and woodlands along the Oconee River. Some homes on Dead River Road in the south end of Montgomery County become surrounded by water. Water begins to cover portions of Dead River Road.



A flood warning continues for the Satilla River at Atkinson affecting Brantley County.

At 8:45 am Wednesday the Satilla River at Atkinson had a stage of 13.6 feet. Flood stage is 13.0 feet. Minor flooding is occurring. The river is forecast to continue rising to 13.8 feet by Thursday morning, then begin falling. At 13.0 feet, Warner Landing, Louis Land, and secondary roads around the KOA campgrounds begin to flood.



Residents and those with interests along these rivers should take action to protect threatened property. High and fast flowing rivers are not suitable for recreation of any kind. Keep children away from flooded areas. Do not drive vehicles through flooded areas. Turn around...don’t drown.
