With a potent winter storm tracking across the central Gulf of Mexico this morning... and the very real threat for significant winter weather across our area late this afternoon through late tonight... we thought you might want to see some snow climatology for the Savannah area.
Records date back to 1874 for snow here in Savannah. The last measurable snowfall of .2" of at the airport in Savannah was 14 years ago... in February 4 of 1996. The last significant snow was the potent El Nino related southern storm snowfall right before Christmas in 1989.
According to records from the National Weather Service... the highest snow total in Savannah (measured at the recording station) was on February 8, 1968 at 3.6 inches. It should be noted however... that several areas in Chatham county reported totals from the 1989 storm up to 5 inches so these numbers are from the Airport. Before being located at the airport... the official observations were actually taken inside the Savannah city limits. Current records for Savannah are actually recorded near Pooler... at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.
Here are the top 10 measured snowfall... from highest to lowest... on record.
1. 3.6 inches...February 8...1968
2. 3.2 inches...December 23...1989

So by far the climatologically favored month of Savannah is February... which comes as no surprise because that is right in the middle of winter.
