The morning lows on Sunday turned out to be the coldest so far this winter/fall season. It actually wasn't even close. Before Sunday, the coldest temp we'd seen at the Savannah airport this winter was 29. It got down to 23 on Sunday morning. The freezing temperatures extended all the way to the beach with both Tybee and Hilton Head Island reporting lows of 28 and 29 respectively. That also marks the first time this season that we've seen sub-freezing temps all the way to the coast.
The ranking as the coldest night of the year could be short-lived, however. Temperatures for Monday morning will be just as cold, if not a couple of degrees colder. The record low we'll be going up against Savannah is 22 set in 1960. We could also set a record on Monday afternoon as well. The record we'll be challenging is for the coldest high temperature ever recorded in Savannah on Jan. 4...it's 44 and it's been the record since 1886. Highs should be in the low to mid 40s, so it will be close.
